As you walk through this hellish cemetery, venturing beyond
the graves of those torn from life before their time, you can
hear the mournful cries of those left behind. A bell tolls in
the distance, announcing the passing of yet another lost soul.
A preacher speaks from a shoddy chapel, giving hollow words of
comfort to the mourners gathered there. The vileness of this
place permeates your clothing, attacking your every sense.
Ghoulish corpses littering the ground, unholy statues with the
heads of gargoyles, and a vile mausoleum filled with bloody
carcasses rotting away - these are the visions which assault
When the Balrogs and Carnifex laid siege to the Realm of
west of the city of Darkhaven. When the Shattering came, they
fled quickly to the Forgotten Woods.

The Pixies and Sprites now live in harmony due to the
Description
Among the most corrupt of the lands of Despair, is Kontaur,
which lies south of the Old Marsh. Once a lush forest filled
with wild vegetation and beautiful sylvan and elven races, it
is now the heart of evil in the southern lands. The cause of
the land's devastation is not completely known. Sages believe
that either Laschte or Vl'arescht opened a gate to a race of
astral travelers known as the Carnifex, which brought legions
of balrogs to Despair long ago. The balrogs waged war against
all sentient races, seeking to destroy at the leisure of their
masters. The avatars of Darkhaven were truly oppressed and
fought for their very lives against this evil army. After
years of war, the Carnifex were finally driven across the Pits
of Banishment and into a legendary castle from which they
could not escape. Without their masters' guidance, the balrogs
lost their edge and began losing the war. They retreated to
Kontaur, the first realm they had conquered, and erected a
castle. Although there have been many attempts to destroy the
Balrog race, none have succeeded. Many new races have come to
the forests of Kontaur recently, and made the Realms even more
perilous. Foul pixie that were corrupted by Laschte, savage
beastmen and, Vl'arescht's creation, the goblins all guard the
paths to and from the Kontaur castle. Yet there lies a shining
hope in this foul land, for A'enaar lifted her hand and
protected a tribe of forest elves known as the Misinkii.

Area Notes
Kontaur can be a pretty dangerous place, but it's full of pretty cool eq and some nice Realms history. Aggro guards wander the castle and the balrog camp (and there's similar mobs called beastmen in the forest). The trickiest part is Carnifex castle, which is entirely no recall. Kontaur is also home to Wicorith, the simplest way to get to The Underworld. Aside from the stuff in Carnifex, the only run mob of real note is Sage of the Mountain. Chlith has some decent stuff that is easy to get too.
The shattered remains of the ancient civilization of tinker
Inhabiting the tunnels beneath the mountains are the gnome's
perpetual enemies and one time students: the hobgoblins.
Similar to goblins in many ways, they lack the intelligence
good measure with cunning and wicked ways. This filthy chaotic

Following the Darkhaven River eastward, many an adventurer
has come upon a vast area of glistening water and waves. A
casual swim is enjoyed here, though one must be wary of fish
and aggressive sharks. It is beneath the lapping waves where
the wonders, and dangers, of the Coral Depths truly lurk. The
fabled Merfolk have founded a paradise under the sea, pushing
back all manners of danger from their wondrous village. Some of
the most wise and intelligent scholars of Despair reside in Mer
Village, teaching the cherished young. The Merfolk have one
common enemy beneath the waves: a sea hag who resides in the
deepest corner of the dark coral tunnels. Little is known about
this hag, yet it is suspected that she is preparing one day to
destroy the Merfolk completely...

The Black Monk was a mob who wandered New Darkhaven during the months leading up toward the shattering. He spewed various obscure prophecies and many players put a lot of energy into trying to make sense of them. Certain keywords triggered him to recite special blurbs, and much effort was put into trying to find these keywords, some of which were secret (for example "eskhatos"). He was tangentially a part of the Orcus-Hastur-Seth Covenant storyline. The Monk had different speeches for members of the different orders. He was modified to give special recognition to Inconnu when they managed the first Orcus kill after ToD was upgraded; and again to give special recognition to Dragonslayer and Ascendere when they managed the first Hastur kill. He also gave a unique special recognition to the player named Covellia.

Black Monk Bloopers
For awhile, it was possible to provoke the Monk with magic missiles and the like, and lure him around- for example, one could lock him in the dungeons of Castle Darkhawk.

Also, by using "tell" to send the Monk a private tell containing all his trigger keywords in one line, one could generate pages of spam to annoy people in DH.
If a person manages to kill Merlin, that person (i.e. the one who gets the kill blow) has their mental state pumped way up, and they start to hallucinate. In battle, Merlin picks up any items off the ground and dumps them in a room called "The Ethereal Plane", which noone has ever managed to find (but the spirit of Sir Gawain drops an item, guiding light, whose long description claims that it guides the way there). Bede claimed at one point that Merlin is supposed to return items thus confiscated when he dies, and hinted at a connection between this, Merlin's Bag of Tricks, and the Silver Crescent-- but Merlin does not return them, and Bede claims this is an accident (but by the time it was discovered, Bede was no longer an immortal).

The Early Explorers
When Knights of the Round first came to the Realms (Early 1999, See CoD back issue #2 for an interview with Bede regarding it.), Merlin was considered one of the most exclusive secrets. The original explorers into the foray were the Ascendere lead by Rathain, Daishan and Nitsuj. Concentrating all their efforts on the area they had the secrets cracked relatively quickly fueling the unfounded speculations that Bede had in some ways helped them. Ascendere maintained the secrets of Merlin for a good few months before a group from Inconnu managed to find their way in. Between the two orders the secret was closely guarded and it took some time before it became common knowledge on how to get to Merlin. Ascendere could get to him. At length, Dragonslayers also started running, but at that point they were practically an Ascendere satellite, so hardly really counted as a distinct run group.

At the time of the shattering some of the changes that Bede had originally made to the area but were never ported finally came across. These changes reduced the firepower required to kill merlin but added in a new unique challenge before him Quantumus. Also numerous items were upgraded or changed in the area including a pearl-hilted dagger, Tornado and the Silver Crescent.

A non order-affiliated group won great fame for finding the way to Merlin shortly thereafter (in 1999 or 2000); this group consisted of Mephie, Kestal, Erdos, Majius, Ihl, and Pheayre.
At some point long ago, Aylssa founded an unofficial family, the Bela Morte family. The name translates as "beautiful death". It consisted, for the most part, of highly elite avatars, mostly from Guild of Druids, Order of Ascendere, and Order of Dragonslayer. Aylssa was a powerful member of Ascendere, not only in terms of running firepower, but also politically. She was a very close partner of Axius, the de-facto leader of the Order of Dragonslayers, and it's largely because of this that the two orders were closely united for a very long time. When Rathain retired, Aylssa took over leadership of the Ascendere Merlin run: a bigger job than it sounds, since it involved a staggering amount of logistic work.

After Axius was balzhured, Aylssa ascended to become the leader of Ascendere.
Aylssa is possibly among a small handful of players who were secretly chosen to playtest the Shattering.
Early History
Mephie was an active player by the late nineties and possibly earlier. In the late nineties she was partners with Kestal. Together, the couple led a kind of unofficial non-ordered troup of runners and explorers. They were the leaders of the first non-ordered Merlin run, which was a major event at the time. At length, Kestal was balzhured, and Mephie was partially Balzhured with him. Thus Mephie has the honor of being a recognized Hero and yet also a former Balzhur victim.

Later History
Mephie continued to play after Kestal departed. At length, she entered an alliance with Zwanth. Together with a number of other dedicated players, she campaigned for the creation of a new order, which would have been the newest order in the Realms. This order never became a reality, however.
A visor of mists is an exceedingly rare out of game eyewear item which was carried by the Mist Dragon in Knights of the Round. It is not exceptionally powerful, but it was unique as a warrior-wearable eyewear which granted detect invis, detect hidden, and scry.

One visor of mists was lost by Erdos in a death trap in the Abbatoir Asylum. Another is believed to have been lost by Selina upon ascension to Immortality (unconfirmed). It's uncertain how many remain extant, or whether any do at all.

Can anyone confirm that this item's name was indeed "a visor of mists" and not "a visor of mist"?
Also, Merlin once popped a single Merlin's Bag of Tricks, but only because of a bug (he killed himself with a magic missile and so his death prog didn't trigger; the death prog normally purges the bag).

Notes
In battle, Merlin shapeshifts back and forth between various shapes. If a person manages to kill Merlin, that person (i.e. the one who gets the killblow) has their mentalstate pumped way up, and they start to hallucinate.

The Great Merlin Race
When Knights of the Round first came to the Realms, Merlin was considered one of the most exclusive secrets. For a long time, only Inconnu and Ascendere could get to him. Some people donned tinfoil hats and conjectured that Bede gave Ascendere unfair help, but this is almost certainly unfounded. The two great early Merlin explorers (i.e. the people who figured out how to get to him) were Rathain of Ascendere and Aylssa (of Inconnu, at that time). At length, Dragonslayers also started running, but at that point they were practically an Ascendere satellite, so hardly really counted as a distinct run group. A non order-affiliated group won great fame for finding the way to Merlin shortly thereafter; this group consisted of Mephie, Kestal, Erdos, Majius, and Pheayre.
Notes
This mob is wandering and mobinvis. At one point, it was possible to detect this mob from afar using a complicated combination of darkness and infravision (is this still possible?) The mob has a powerful area attack and heals itself if it sees someone quaff a potion. When a group manages to kill it, Divine Retribution goes down in a blaze of glory, killing everyone in the room. Some players conjecture that there are two Divine Retributions, one in the main part of RoW and another in the Courtyard of Divine Worship -- but it's difficult to confirm or dispute this since the latter mob is mobinvis and the Courtyard is apparently no longer accessible. In either case, the mobinvis guardian of the Courtyard is often referred to as "ret", whether or not the conjecture is true.

Description
Very little is commonly known about the Realm of Worship. This
series of dark, lonely tunnels lies deep within the mountains
of Moria. It was once the residence of the Terror, the dreaded
earthly manifestations of the Gods. However, it is now empty
save for the remaining guardians of Terror. Two tales
concerning this Realm's new purpose are being told lately. One
claims that the Realm now serves as a temple where the most
desperate of followers can come to convene with their God. The
other dictates that the most powerful Terror guardian has made
a lair out of the dark tunnels. Whether these tales are true
or not, the Realm of Worship is wandered by only the most
powerful adventurers, and occasionally by those who seek a
quick death.

Area Notes
Realm of Worship, or RoW, is a small area filled with death traps and big run mobs, particularly Ret.

Scholarly Notes
The area is actually much larger than most scholars realize, but about half of it-- and the best half, at that-- is evidently sealed from mortal access. The area consists of three parts. The southern area is a series of extremely deadly caves, including death traps which are very easy to overlook even with scry. The middle area is a maze filled with altars to ancient Immortals of the Realms of Despair. The northern area is the Terror Clan Headquarters, which includes the Hall of Mirrors, a series of rooms with exits leading into some of the old clan headquarters.

Historically there were three ways into the middle section of the area. Long, long ago, it was possible to simply head straight north, and open a secret door with a secret keyword. This was removed a very long time ago, however. Secondly, at one time a teleporting mob called the Happy Death Orb would transport players into the Courtyard (i.e. the middle area). This was usually fatal: to escape, one had to either know of a secret door, or walk through the whole maze, whilst a huge invisible aggressive mob wandered about (the Courtyard is nosupplicate and norecall, of course). The third path was actually a secret route straight to the border between the north and middle parts of the area-- the Terror Tome. It involved walking through three secret exits, of which the second has since been sealed off. Now, usually, the first step into the Terror Tome would instantly transport the player back to New Darkhaven; however, the Order of Dragonslayer discovered a way to slip through unnoticed. In this way they were able to penetrate not only into the uttermost secrets of Terror HQ, but even beyond, through the Hall of Mirrors into some other old clan headquarters, including: Darkblade, (original) Dragonslayer, Malkavian, Chaos, and at least one other (Nosferatu?) The Hall of Mirrors also contained a back entrance into the active Inconnu Headquarters (which the Dragonslayers of course did not explore).
Notes/History
The Happy Death Orb is a teleporting mob created by Blodkai. It's believed the Orb's purpose is to molest people who log on more than 8 characters simultaneously. It has been known to attack such people. Typically, there was not just a single Happy Death Orb, but a multitude, all teleporting around simultaneously. An Orb was killed once by the Guild of Mages, who used suicidal hit-and-die tactics to slowly kill it. After this, measures seem to have been taken to make the Orb invincible. At one point, the Happy Death Orb was modified so instead of killing players, it would transport them to the Courtyard of Divine Worship, a treacherous norecall nosupplicate maze patrolled by a powerful mobinvis guardian.

The Happy Death Orb does not seem to terrorize the Realms any more these days. It seems to have been OOG for quite a few years now (needs confirmation).
The Cascading Vortex is a light which was (is?) carried by the Mist Dragon in Knights of the Round.

The standard conjecture is that the Cascading Vortex is programmed so that only one can exist at a time, and when it is lost, a new one will be dropped by the Mist Dragon. But this is only a conjecture, and very little is known for sure about the light. It is suspected that the light has a less than 100% regen rate, and that failed regens are what trigger the Mist Dragon to drop new vortices.

At one point, the Vortex was scrapped, and this led to a race to the Mist Dragon, where it was successfully recovered.

At one time there were (are?) two Cascading Vortices. Consistent with the above conjecture, this is believed to be because of a bug in Knights of the Round.

Perhaps tragically, the item virtually never was (is?) used in practice, largely for fear of loss.

Description
The Tower of Despair has been a black stake plunged into the
heart of the land west of Darkhaven since the Age of Honor.
The god Strahd created this monstrosity as a gift to his most
loyal servant, Orcus, the Demon Lord of Death. Orcus crafted
foul minions in his tower to terrorize the lands of Despair
throughout the early ages of the Realms. Orcus was
unchallenged in might until meeting the legendary Darkblade,
Zarkas. Wielding the soulblade Nemesis, the Darkblade warrior
forced Orcus and his minions to return to the Tower. Invoking
the power of Scarab, Zarkas sealed the Tower and imprisoned
Orcus forever.
But Orcus did not spend this time idle. Though he was weakened
by his struggles with Zarkas, he was able to capture and
contain a Solar, a being of pure light. Unable to corrupt his
hostage, Orcus bided his time.
As the Ages passed, Orcus grew frustrated and irrational. His
imprisonment infuriated him to no end and he sought release.
These powerful feelings emanated from the Demon Prince so
fervently that another imprisoned being detected them. As the
moon rose that night, an offer was made. As the moon waxed in
the sky, haggling began. As the moon sank towards the horizon,
Orcus' lifeless form fell to the floor only to rise again.
Whatever spirit commanded Orcus' form had both power and
purpose. He shattered the wards Zarkas erected and sent
minions under cover of night to kidnap demi-humans from their
towns. He took these captives and subjected them to horrifying
experiments, twisting them through magicks into the horrible
entities. Those who had been bound to Orcus before his death
unknowingly entered into a Covenant with the entity in
exchange for more power. Only Hastur the Unspeakable
understood what had occurred and received even more power in
exchange for his silence.
The changes in the Tower of Despair did not go unnoticed.
Many flocked from Darkhaven seeking to unravel this riddle,
but none succeeded. However, it is possible their actions
weakened or altered whatever nefarious plans had laid dormant
within the Tower and lessened the impact of the Shattering.
Following the Shattering, the Tower stood quietly as it rose
crookedly from the Mire. Travelers who have spoken with
Tyrax, the Watcher of the Tower, say that he reports he can no
longer sense Orcus. Whether this is a new trick of the Demon
Prince or whether he has met his demise is as yet unknown.

Historical Scandals
The Tower of Despair (hereafter "ToD") was originally a levelling area. At one time, many levelling enthusiasts used the mob Demi-Lich as the pivotal backbone of their entire late-levelling sprint. When this mob was altered to be made less useful for levelling, the resulting uproar was quite astounding.

Later (but still quite a ways earlier than the Shattering) the area was revamped by Moonbeam to be avatar/multiavatar level. For a few weeks, the Tower was sealed off, causing a truly astonishing perpetual hubbub of excited players to congregate just outside. Sometime during this period the second scandal occurred: a group managed to infiltrate the tower via a secret entrance from Carnifex Castle in Kontaur. In response, the immortals changed that secret entrance so that instead of leading into Orcus' room, it lead into a ToD death-trap.

When the area was opened, the first organization to successfully kill Orcus was the Order of Inconnu. This caused some very unjustified feelings of jealousy in the Order of Dragonslayers (and some of the various other orders as well). Some folks speculated openly of Inconnu-Immortal conspiracies, including this author; however, in retrospect, these rumors are transparently silly and ridiculous. As a "reward" for their spectacular feat of bravery, the Inconnu received special recognition from the Black Monk, a mysterious mobile who wandered New Darkhaven at the time.

For the longest time, noone was able to defeat Hastur, a mob who appeared upon Orcus' death. This was one extremely difficult mob! He was finally beaten by an enormous group made up jointly of the Orders of Dragonslayer and Ascendere. The tactic was for all available bodies to get in the room, and suicidally attack as many times as they could before being slaughtered. Meanwhile, the tank through this ordeal was Rathain, who was exceedingly powerful and had over 2,000 hitpoints. In total, two kills were made. Both times, Hastur dropped a ring, which was pretty good but not game-breakingly good. His death prog mentioned something about a helm, and this caused endless speculation about a possible pop. Both rings are believed to have been devoured by Balzhur.

However, victory against Hastur ultimately only led to further mysteries of the Tower, and it may be these will never be completely revealed.
