Description
Among the most corrupt of the lands of Despair, is Kontaur,
which lies south of the Old Marsh. Once a lush forest filled
with wild vegetation and beautiful sylvan and elven races, it
is now the heart of evil in the southern lands. The cause of
the land's devastation is not completely known. Sages believe
that either Laschte or Vl'arescht opened a gate to a race of
astral travelers known as the Carnifex, which brought legions
of balrogs to Despair long ago. The balrogs waged war against
all sentient races, seeking to destroy at the leisure of their
masters. The avatars of Darkhaven were truly oppressed and
fought for their very lives against this evil army. After
years of war, the Carnifex were finally driven across the Pits
of Banishment and into a legendary castle from which they
could not escape. Without their masters' guidance, the balrogs
lost their edge and began losing the war. They retreated to
Kontaur, the first realm they had conquered, and erected a
castle. Although there have been many attempts to destroy the
Balrog race, none have succeeded. Many new races have come to
the forests of Kontaur recently, and made the Realms even more
perilous. Foul pixie that were corrupted by Laschte, savage
beastmen and, Vl'arescht's creation, the goblins all guard the
paths to and from the Kontaur castle. Yet there lies a shining
hope in this foul land, for A'enaar lifted her hand and
protected a tribe of forest elves known as the Misinkii.

Area Notes
Kontaur can be a pretty dangerous place, but it's full of pretty cool eq and some nice Realms history. Aggro guards wander the castle and the balrog camp (and there's similar mobs called beastmen in the forest). The trickiest part is Carnifex castle, which is entirely no recall. Kontaur is also home to Wicorith, the simplest way to get to the Underworld. Aside from the stuff in Carnifex, the only run mob of real note is Sage of the Mountain. Chlith has some decent stuff that is easy to get too.
thrashes through the water over its back, thrashing with enough force to knock
a man senseless if it were to connect. This creature doesn't look to be a
normal inhabitant of the pond. Chances are it fell down this hole and became
entrenched in the quagmire. Its great bulk suggests it has survived here on
those that have been unfortunate enough to find themselves near the pond.
Reduces strength by two points for the duration of the spell. Some spells have an opposite spell that cancels out the effects (eg. curse is cancelled out by remove curse). The only ways to get rid of weaken are to wait for it to run out or to cast dispel magic, which will remove all affects that are cast on you. When casting weaken on a mobile there seems to be a greater chance of the spell holding if you poison the mobile first.
Description
After many eons of seeming emptiness, the cloaking illusion
of the fell Sorceress Naris has been lifted from the building
known unto men as Redferne's Residence, or alternatively, The
Stronghold of Naris.
Redferne was a loyal knight paladin, true in both sword and
honor. Betrothed in marriage to the lovely Naris of Thalos at
a young age, they built a grand fortress and their lands
prospered. Naris, alas, dabbled in sorcery, and as the years
progressed, her soul was overtaken by the evils below.
When the fiend liches came to claim her body and soul, a
mighty battle ensued, in which Redferne himself is known to
have lost his life. Less is known of Naris' fate.
The illusion of emptiness was in some manner related to the
strange location the fortress formerly held, floating in the
firmament of Darkhaven. When the spell was broken, the
fortress returned to its location of old, behind great dark
gates in a quiet corner of what is now referred to as the 'Old
Marsh.'

Transylvania was once a populated isle floating in the vast
Sea of Sorrows. Its people were strong and hard-working, ruled
by an honorable Prince. Its fate was decided when the ancient
Inconnu elder, Dracula, was overcome by a malevolent entity
and abandoned his clan. It is thus that he came to
Transylvania. The land's people slowly began disappearing,
replaced with vampiric minions and leeches. In the end, the
Transylvanian Prince fled, leaving the living that remained to
die and eventually live in undeath. A small number of
individuals still fight the darkness in this hopeless land.
The Count Dracula, as he is now known, has taken up residence
in a manor in the northern part of the realm, commanding his
minions from his lair. It is rumored that he has been killed
many times, only to rise again...for he is cursed and his soul
is unwelcome in the higher planes.
Hidden away from prying eyes, a defiled temple emanates evil
from obscure caverns beneath the surface. Here resides the
cabalistic followers of Ba'al, those who scorn light just as
they scorn the disgusting curse of a pure lifestyle. It is
rumored that the Bukken, a fiendish gatekeeper of sorts,
awaits hapless wanderers and those that seek out the Baali at
the entrance to their secluded halls. However, few have ever
returned from voyages to confirm the existance of such a
being. Worse yet, given the occasional blood-curdling howl
from within, even more depraved demons are thought to haunt
the interior of the cathedral. These, of course, might just be
from hapless victims.

According to legend, the cathedral itself somehow draws power
from an ancient rift carved through the plane by greater
demons, but like much of the information regarding servants of
Ba'al, no living soul has been able to claim first-hand
Description
The Tower of Despair has been a black stake plunged into the
heart of the land west of Darkhaven since the Age of Honor.
The god Strahd created this monstrosity as a gift to his most
loyal servant, Orcus, the Demon Lord of Death. Orcus crafted
foul minions in his tower to terrorize the lands of Despair
throughout the early ages of the Realms. Orcus was
unchallenged in might until meeting the legendary Darkblade,
Zarkas. Wielding the soulblade Nemesis, the Darkblade warrior
forced Orcus and his minions to return to the Tower. Invoking
the power of Scarab, Zarkas sealed the Tower and imprisoned
Orcus forever.
But Orcus did not spend this time idle. Though he was weakened
by his struggles with Zarkas, he was able to capture and
contain a Solar, a being of pure light. Unable to corrupt his
hostage, Orcus bided his time.
As the Ages passed, Orcus grew frustrated and irrational. His
imprisonment infuriated him to no end and he sought release.
These powerful feelings emanated from the Demon Prince so
fervently that another imprisoned being detected them. As the
moon rose that night, an offer was made. As the moon waxed in
the sky, haggling began. As the moon sank towards the horizon,
Orcus' lifeless form fell to the floor only to rise again.
Whatever spirit commanded Orcus' form had both power and
purpose. He shattered the wards Zarkas erected and sent
minions under cover of night to kidnap demi-humans from their
towns. He took these captives and subjected them to horrifying
experiments, twisting them through magicks into the horrible
entities. Those who had been bound to Orcus before his death
unknowingly entered into a Covenant with the entity in
exchange for more power. Only Hastur the Unspeakable
understood what had occurred and received even more power in
exchange for his silence.
The changes in the Tower of Despair did not go unnoticed.
Many flocked from Darkhaven seeking to unravel this riddle,
but none succeeded. However, it is possible their actions
weakened or altered whatever nefarious plans had laid dormant
within the Tower and lessened the impact of the Shattering.
Following the Shattering, the Tower stood quietly as it rose
crookedly from the Mire. Travelers who have spoken with
Tyrax, the Watcher of the Tower, say that he reports he can no
longer sense Orcus. Whether this is a new trick of the Demon
Prince or whether he has met his demise is as yet unknown.
away and hid from it. Gre'Vos found pleasure in the
Her plot to plunge the world back into the darkness it
Description
Separated from all other worlds by a portal, Teracchei thrives
amidst spiraling towers and a desert climate. Hardened by
their tough existence, the gith who live in this growing city
war between each other, split by race. The githzerai defenses
slowly crumble before the encroaching darkness that is the
githyanki might, led by the demi-lich queen. Trapped between
the two factions, the Pirates of the Gith deviously fund their
own survival by selling necessities to both sides, at a price.
As with vultures, the gith feast off any who wander into their
harsh realm, picking over the remnants of old corpses. Leaving
their plane in search of adventure, gith nobles seek, kill and
consume all others who are not of their race. Hating all
others who are different, few gith survive in this plane
without learning the fundamental laws of greed and fierce
loyalty to ones self.

Area Notes
The Gith are a race descended from Humans. Once long ago,
they were a peaceful civilization of Humans that were
captured by Mind Flayers and tormented for centuries.
Eventually, a Gith savior led them to freedom, yet their
bodies had been flayed by the mental powers of the Illithids.
The Gith found themselves stronger, quicker, luckier and
smarter than average Humans, yet they had lost much of their
wisdom, stamina and charisma.

Gith are yellow-skinned and very long of limb. Sunken eyes
peer from yellowed sockets, now strangely capable of
naturally detecting the invisible. The Gith race has split
into three distinct groups: the good (Githzerai), the selfish
neutral (Pirates of Gith), and the evil (the Githyanki).

Gith may follow the ways of the following classes:
Augurer Bladesinger Cleric Mage Nephandi Thief Vampire
Warrior

Gith gain experience on a scale of normal rate * 1.06.
a magickal gateway.

Area Notes
Sep 2001 by Aphrael. This area is mainly Gith-only, and Gith
characters may find easy access to the area by telling Tagetartle
'The glittering sands call my name'. (Tagetartle is located 2ne, 2n
from Darkhaven Square.
